    Description:
Standing portrait of Admiral Byrd striding forward as he braves the elements leading an expedition through Antarctica. He is dressed in a fur parka and heavy boots. His head is bare and he faces up into the cold wind as he looks out at the distant horizon. His clenched fists are at his sides. The sculpture rests on a square base inscribed with Admiral Byrd's accomplishments. The base is made of marble roughly cut to reflect the sun and resemble the reflection of snow.

This sculpture, commissioned by the National Geographic Society, commemorates all of Rear Admiral Byrd's achievements in exploring Antarctica. Byrd led five expeditions through Antarctica and was the first man to fly over the North Pole (1926) and the South Pole (1929). IAS files contain related articles from Evening Star (District of Columbia), Dec. 8, 1970 and Dec. 29, 1959. The Evening Star article from December 8, 1970 notes that De Weldon was in the process of installing another statue of Byrd deep in Antarctica at Byrd Station in the territory named for Byrd's s wife, Marie Byrd Land. The Evening Star article from Dec. 29, 1959 includes a photo of artist working on the sculpture in his studio.
