The monument consists of a tall stone column topped by a standing figure of a Continental soldier holding a rifle in front of him. The column rests on top of a square base adorned with four bronze plaques that detail the October 22, 1777 battle to defend Fort Mercer against the British Hessian forces. The monument rests on a granite platform with three steps.
