Remarks:
Commissioned by Zadock Pratt (1790-1871), the founder of the Town of Prattsville, formerly known as Schoharie-kill. Mr. Pratt operated a tannery in the town from approximately 1824 to 1845 and then operated the town bank until 1853. He was also a United States Congressman. The sculptures were executed by several artists between 1843 and 1871. The project reportedly began when Mr. Pratt commissioned a journeying stone cutter to sculpt his bust in a rock outcropping overlooking Prattsville in return for lodging. Over the years, various images associated with Mr. Pratt were added. Artists said to have worked on the sculpture include: Andrew Pearse, John Fair, Charles Kissock, E. Brevier and I. H. Vermilyea. The property, previously called Monument Hill, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and on the New York State Historic Register. IAS files contain a Building-Structure Inventory Form from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation.
