    Remarks:
In 1809 as Marc Eliche traveled through the prairie that became Avoyelles his wagon broke down. He stayed and established a trading post which became the city of Marksville. The artist was a member of the 1959 steering committee for Marksville's sesquicentennial celebration for which he developed the broken wagon wheel to be used as an emblem. Inspired by this experience the artist suggested creating the two sculptures and placing them at the city's entrance. The sculptures cost $12,500, which was raised through donations from the Celebration Committee, local businesses, and other sources.
