Description:  The Broad Street subway station and adjacent plaza are integrated through architecture, trees, and sculpture into an effective entrance to Temple University. For the subway station, the architects designed a large head house with a glass roof that allows the sun to shine down on the subway platform. For the adjacent plaza, the landscape architects created a grassy area dotted with twenty London plane trees. The focal point of the plaza is a granite portal made by Richard Fleischner to symbolically represent the entrance to Temple University for students exiting the Broad Street subway station. This sculpture project was initiated by Temple University as a way to make the area safer and more attractive. The city remodeled the subway station and the university built the adjacent plaza. Mitchell/Giurgola Architects was the architectural firm for both projects. The project was supported by the Pew Charitable Trusts, the William Penn Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
