Description:
The monument is topped by a Civil War soldier leaning on a rifle that now missing. He grasps the top of his rifle barrel with his proper left hand above his proper right hand. On his proper right hip is an ammunition satchel with two buckles. Under his proper right elbow is another pouch. Beneath his proper left elbow, hanging from the belt, is an empty scabbard. The figure has a moustache. The sculpture is mounted on a rectangular pedestal that is set on a stepped base.

Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned by the Augusta Memorial Association and the Ladies' Auxiliary. The sculpture was created by Victor Pathia and installed by Charles M. Ehmann. The remains of 700 unknown Confederate soldiers from the fields of Allegheny, McDowell, Cross Keys, Port Republic, Piedmont and C. Virginia are gathered around the monument. The monument honors 870 men that are buried there, recorded by name, company and regiment: Virginia 305, N. Carolina 176, S. Carolina 59, Georgia 208, Alabama 49, Florida 8, Mississippi 11, Louisiana 19, Tennessee 12, Arkansas 20, Texas 3, and 207 recorded by name only.
