    Remarks:
The sculpture is a small scale replica of the gate which stood at the western entrance to the common from 1805-1850. The original carvings on the gate were fabricated by Samuel McIntire (1757-1811). The original carving is now housed at the Essex Institute (IAS record 75009252). Collaborators in the fabrication of the sculptures include the 101st Battalion of the National Guard Corps of Engineers, the Camp Curtis Guild, and Carl Peterson of Sasaki Associates. The sculpture was originally located on the opposite side of the common and was moved to its present location in 1990. For related information see: the City of Salem's Annual Report for the Year Ending, June 30, 1976, pg. 227.
