Description:  A traditional Austrian klapotezt, a windmill driven noisemaker, constructed of several kinds of wood. The six-bladed windmill has clappers which sound as the blades turn. The tail of the windmill is a bundle of chokecherry branches, with berries intact, which keeps the propeller headed to the wind. The device is attached to the top of a long oak pole. Subject:  Abstract Object Type:  Outdoor Sculpture -- New York -- Dundee Kinetic Sculpture Owner:  Fulkerson, Roger & Sayre, 5576 Route 14, Dundee, New York Provenance:  Formerly in the collection of Smith, Lyman, Glenora-on-Seneca, New York, 14837 Remarks:  The windmill was constructed under the direction of Lyman Smith, using plans obtained from the Styrian Museum of Folklore and the Styrian State Museum (Graz, Austria). The windmill was erected to make loud clapping noises to scare birds away from vineyard crops. The windmill was originally installed on the Fulkerson's property, who were neighbors of Smith.
