The monument was designed by Douglas J. Beck in honor of East Longmeadow's 75th anniversary. The McCormick Longmeadow Stone Company donated the circular block of East Longmeadow redstone, and stonecutters Christian Paine and Leo Giancola carved the design. In March 1969, the monument was mounted on a float for the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day parade and in June 1969 it was moved to the East Longmeadow Town Hall where it was dedicated on June 17th by the town's 75th Anniversary Committee. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire dated April 30, 1973. For additional information see the Springfield Union (Springfield, MA), June 18, 1969.
