    Description:
Memorial consists of two walls in a courtyard. The long east-west wall of black granite slopes from 72 in. to 4 in. and is slightly curved. The intersecting north-south wall is incised with quotes and the names of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. The intersecting wall is primarily polished black granite, some unpublished granite and has red granite at the intersection of the other wall. Sixteen ornamental flowering pear trees (Pyrus Red Spire) are planted along the wall to symbolize that life continues.

    Remarks:
The monument, which commemorates 135 Oregon police officers who died in the line of duty, cost approximately $100,000. It was commissioned by the Oregon Police Memorial Committee and funded by donations from police officers, businesses, organizations and private citizens including a $50,000 donation from the Fred Meyer Foundation. Monument was initiated by state senator Tony Meeker following a Police Memorial Day address. Meeker introduced a bill to establish a trust account for the monument with the state treasury. According to the artist, "the long curved wall is symbolic of either the officer's life or the family that is left behind. Broken apart by the loss, it continues after, but is changed." IAS files include a related article from the Statesman-Journal (Salem, OR), May 12, 1991.
