(Plaque on back of base contains Congressional Medal of Honor Citation.) (On side of base:) Erected by John Basilone Post No. 280 signed Founder's mark appears.
Description:
Full-length portrait of John Basilone. He wears a World War II combat uniform. His proper right foot rests on a rock. He holds a large machine gun in both hands. A cartridge belt is thrown over his proper left shoulder. The bronze sculpture stands on a rectangular granite base.

Remarks:
Basilone was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroism at Guadalcanal. He died in action at Iwo Jima and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. The sculpture was erected by the John Basilone Post No. 280. IAS files contain copies of related articles from The Star-Ledger, Sept. 18, 1994 and Feb. 20, 1995.
