The Pershing Square redesign and sculpture installation was inspired by a passage from writer Carey McWilliams' 1946 edition of "Southern California Country: An Island on the Land," in which he describes Pershing Square as a microcosm of city life in Los Angeles. Aspects of life in Southern California and the history of Los Angeles are the elements of the Pershing Square sculpture installation created by Barbara McCarren. 1) A bronze Earthquake Faultline flanked by gold and grey quartzite runs across the square and ends at Ocean Fountain, which symbolizes the Pacific Ocean. 2) An Orange Grove in the center of the square is filled with Valencia and Washington orange trees to symbolize a key crop in the early economic development of the area. 3) Star Walk is a section of pavement embedded with forty terrazzo stars to symbolize the constellations visible in the Southern California sky, as well as "star-gazing" along Hollywood's Walk of Fame. 4) Telescopes in steel, copper, and bronze, two with past views of Pershing Square, in 1888 and in 1943, and one with the present view. 5) Carey McWilliams Bench inscribed with his passage describing life in Pershing Square. 6) Abalone Fountain with a shell-shaped basin covered in abalone shells symbolizes the early abalone harvesting industry at White's Point in the Los Angeles Harbor. 7) Postcard Bench embedded with porcelain tiles bearing Southern California postcard images is installed near the Hill Street Metro Station to great visitors. 8) Historic Court where monuments previously installed in Pershing Square were repositioned.
