Description:
A uniformed Civil War soldier stands atop tall base at parade ease. He wears a knee-length coat and holds the barrel of his rifle with both hands, the butt resting by his proper right foot. He stands atop an ornate multi-sectioned base, with columns and castellated mid-section. The lower portion of the base is decorated with reliefs of crossed flags on the front; and on one side crossed swords; and on the other, an anchor. The monument sits atop a stepped base and is encircled by a short, spearheaded fence.

Remarks:
The monument commemorates Civil War soldiers of Sussex County, and lists the battles in which they fought. The monument cost $6,000, of which $2,000 was raised through the Grand Army Posts and private subscription. Sussex County contributed $4,000. The State of New Jersey authorized the County to match the raised amount two-for-one, dispersed through a Board of Freeholders. A Heroes Monument Association was incorporated by Act of Legislature, April 6, 1865; but the monument committee was not appointed by the Grand Army Posts until April of 1890. IAS files contain articles from the New Jersey Herald, dated Aug. 15, 1895, Sept. 13, 1895, Sept. 14, 1895 and June 30, 1955.
