Description:
A portrait of James J. Brady shielding a barefoot girl under is overcoat, a paper held in his left hand and a satchel over his shoulder. The figures stand on a rectangular granite base in front of a central stele.

Remarks:
James J. Brady rose from poverty to success, and found pleasure in bringing Christmas cheer to Detroit's less fortunate children. James J. Brady founded the Old Newsboys' Goodfellow of Detroit Fund in 1914. The memorial was commissioned by the Old Newsboys' Goodfellows of Detroit Fund. The total cost of the memorial was $7,000. "Art in Detroit Public Places," by Dennis Alan Nawrocki lists the media as granite and Monument News, June 1929 article lists the media as Vermont grey marble. The sculpture has been used as an advertisement for Vermont Marble Company and appears in an ad from June 1929.
