    Description: 
    Standing figure of man, dressed in boots, pants rolled up above knees, and shirt torn to expose chest. Composite creature representing "Sin" is coiled around the figure's legs. Creature has the head of a snake, body of a panther and wings of a vampire. Man's hands are behind his body, grasping the snake's neck. Figure and creature rest on eight-sided base, which is placed on top of large granite boulder.

    Inspired by a sermon given by Dr. Merton S. Rice, pastor of Metropolitan United Methodist Church. Erected by the Rice Men's Bible Class as a tribute to their teacher Dr. Rice. Cost $6,000. IAS files contain related materials and article from Detroit News (April 29, 1928) which refers to statue as "Hope."
