    (Tablet on south side:) This shaft was erected by the State of New York to honor the memory of William McKinley, twenty-fifth President of the United States of America. (Tablet on west side:) William McKinley was born at Miles, Ohio, January 29th, 1843, was enlisted in the 23rd Ohio Volunteers June 11th, 1861, as a private; was mustered out July 26th, 1865 as a Major by Bravery for gallantry under fire. (Tablet on north side:) William McKinley was elected to Congress as a Representative from Ohio 1878, '80, '82, '84, '86, '88. Was elected Governor of Ohio in 1891 and 1893 and President of the United States in 1896 and 1900. (Tablet on east side:) William McKinley died in Buffalo, September 14th, 1901, victim of a treacherous assassin, who shot the President as he was extending the hand of courtesy.
    Description: 
    The monument consists of a marble obelisk mounted on an octagonal base surrounded by four recumbent lions and four turtles. The lions are placed at the corners of a base, and just above them are four small marble fountain basins. The monument is sited in the center of a circular plaza paved with multicolored stone. Marble steps lead up from the plaza to the four marble water basins. The outer edge of the plaza is surrounded by a marble balustrade. A bronze chain strung between white marble piers encircles the plaza.

    Remarks: 
    The monument was erected to memorialize William McKinley who was assassinated in Buffalo during the Pan-American Exposition held in 1901. The base and the monument design were created by architects Carrere & Hastings. The lions and turtles were sculpted by Alexander Proctor, who did some of the hand carving of the lion at the Indian Hill barn in Bedford, New York. Other decorative carvings were done by Newman & Evans. The cost of the monument was $100,000. An inscription carved into marble on outer part of the square, left side, reads: DEDICATED SEPTEMBER 6, 1907/CARRERE AND HASTING ARCHITECTS/A. PHIMISTER PROCTOR SCULPT/GEO. W. MALTBY AND SONS BLDRS. The inscription carved into marble on outer part of the plaza, right side, reads: COMMISSIONERS/EDWARD H. BUTLER-PRESIDENT/WILSON S. BISSELL JOHN C. WILBURN/E.A. CURTIS GEORGE T. MATTHEWS.
    A bronze plaque on outer part of the square reads: NIAGARA SQUARE/JOSEPH ELLICOTT, AGENT FOR THE HOLLAND LAND CO.,/SURVEYED AND LAID OUT THIS SQUARE IN 1803-1804./THE SQUARE AND STREETS RADIATING FROM IT REMAIN AS/ORIGINALLY PLANNED FOR THE VILLAGE OF NEW AMSTERDAM/ERECTED BY/NEW YORK STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT/AND BUFFALO JUNIOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE/1940.
