    Description:
A circular concrete plaza with a centrally located, tall, black, aluminum pole structure that casts shadows. The aluminum structure rises on eight poles swirling inward at the top to form a central ring of metal, reminiscent of the sun's orbit. At specific days and times during the year, the shadows highlight plaques set in the plaza that commemorate events of significance to Florida's history. Directly below the aluminum structure is a cylindrical bench that contains a meteorite (believed to be 4 1/2 million years old, and said to have fallen to earth in Dade County). Four walkways lead up to the circular plaza. Around the plaza's perimeter are eight curved concrete benches. Beyond the perimeter are four benches placed under trees at the four cardinal directions and the plaza is surrounded by flowering plants, Giant Evergreen Lirope and live oak trees.

    Remarks:
The sculpture was funded through Florida's Art in State Buildings Program. The artist collaborated with University faculty from the archeoastronomy, architecture, history, engineering, geology, and mathematics departments. IAS files contain a related article from Sculpture (January 1996), pg. 14-15.
The sculpture's shadow highlights plaques commemorating the first sighting of Florida by Ponce de Leon, 1513; the first time a map of Florida was submitted to Lord Hillsborough, for whom the county is named, 1772; the establishment of the first town government of Tampa, 1849; the groundbreaking ceremony for the University of South Florida, 1958; and the date of the first moon landing in Apollo 11, launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, 1969.
Nearby plaque reads: NANCY HOLT/SOLAR ROTARY, 1995/PURCHASED 1995 WITH FUNDS PROVIDED BY FLORIDA'S ART IN STATE BUILDINGS PROGRAM (F.S.255.043).
