    Description:
An abstract sculpture with three vertical forms placed atop a grassy mound, surrounded by five blocks of granite arranged in a circular fashion. One of the forms is a vertical Greek column of polished granite, placed atop a roughly rectangular block of unpolished granite. A section is cut-out of the granite block, allowing people to sit on it. The second form is a double diamond-shaped piece of semi-polished granite, set at a 25 angle atop a roughly rectangular block of unpolished granite with a cut-out seating area. The diamond-shape piece and rectangular block are separated by an 8-sided stainless steel plate. Two stainless steel support poles are bolted onto each side of the diamond-shaped form and extend to two granite blocks that surround the mound. The third form is a diamond-shaped piece of unpolished granite, also set at a 25 degree angle. About 1/3 of the way up, a manmade crack divides the form into two pieces. Three stainless steel rods inside the forms appear to hold it together. All forms are secured with stainless steel shafts anchoring them to the buried concrete foundations.

    Remarks:
The sculpture cost $38,500 and was funded under the state's One Percent for Art program, when the college renovated two campus buildings. Frank Swanson assisted the artist with stone cutting and Jeff Nelson helped fabricate the stainless steel bars. The three-part sculpture symbolizes three essential educational thrusts: the study of nature (the rough-hewn rock outcropping); classical dedication to learning (the polished Greek column); and technological creativity (the geometric form extended from stainless-steel supports). Nearby plaque on ground reads: "OF THE EARTH AND MAN"/JOHN T. YOUNG (copyright symbol) 1989/SEATTLE, WASHINGTON/COMMISSION FOR THE COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES/AND THE CITIZENS OF COLORADO BY THE STATE ART/IN PUBLIC PLACES PROGRAM OF THE COLORADO/COUNCIL ON THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES.
