    Description: 
    Portrait of David Gouverneur Burnet, dressed in boots and a long two-tiered cloak over a shirt with high collar and a waistcoat. He is depicted standing and his raised proper right hand holds a rolled document; his proper left hand rests on his hip. The sculpture is mounted upon a tiered granite base with flanking granite side panels, set atop a concrete foundation faced with granite.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture commemorates David Gouverneur Burnet (1788-1870), an early Texas politician. He was President of the Republic of Texas 1836; Vice President from 1838 to 1841; and Secretary of State in 1846. The portrait of Burnet was created by Julian Rhodes Muench; the base was designed by architect Donald Nelson. The entire monument cost of $7,500. It was erected by the State of Texas with funds appropriated by the federal government to commemorate the centennial of Texas independence.
