Description:
A nude male stands in a classical pose with proper left foot forward on a short block and proper left arm resting on his thigh. A cloth is draped over his raised thigh and through his hand. An upright shield rests against the back of his legs. At his rear proper right side, the head of Pallas Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, rests on a shattered Doric column symbolizing the heritage and culture given to the world by the Greek people. The sculpture is mounted on a two-tiered block base.

Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned jointly by the American Hellenic Educational and Progressive Association (AHEPA) and the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The sculpture was presented to the City of Allentown by the Lehigh Chapter of the Order of the AHEPA in 1943. IAS files contain related excerpts from Myra Yellin Goldfarb's "Stepping Stones into the Past: Allentown's Outdoor Public Sculpture, 1900-1988," City of Allentown, pg. 12; and "Sculpture in the Park: From the Collection of Muriel and Philip Berman," City of Allentown.
