(Bronze plaques on base list names of members of Pap Thomas Post, arranged by state, all members of the post who have held office in the Department of Kansas, and every post commander of Pap Thomas Post) signed Founder's mark appears.
Description:
Union soldier dressed in uniform stands clutching the barrel of his rifle with both hands. The butt of the gun rests on the ground. He wears a hat, jacket, pants, and boots. He stands atop a base with several inscribed plaques.

Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned by Ira D. Brougher in honor of those who served the cause of the Union during the Civil War. Bronze plaques on the base list the names of veterans who were members of the Pap Thomas Post No. 52, Grand Army of the Republic, Department of Kansas. IAS files contain related articles from Great Bend Tribune, Aug. 10, 1915; Oct. 11, 1915; Nov. 5, 1915; Nov. 15, 1915; Nov. 16, 1915; and Nov. 20, 1915. IAS files also contain a related article from Great Bend Tribune, Nov. 19, 1915, which includes a transcription of the names on the plaques. According to the the Great Bend Tribune, Oct. 11, 1915, one of the original inscription plaques omitted a few names and another plaque was to be made and installed. IAS files also contain a copy of the Village Crier Newsletter of the Barton County Historical Society (Sept. 2011), vol. 19, no. 4, which notes the sculptor Frederick C. Hibbard, the title "The Rifleman," and the dedication date Nov. 19, 1915, and includes a photo of the statue in Courthouse Square.
