    Description: 
    A standing portrait of Rev. Theobold Mathew dressed in a long cape, the edge of which he pulls up to his chest with his proper left hand. His proper right hand extended slightly. The sculpture rests on a tall gray granite base which originally had a fountain attached to the back.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was originally installed on Central Street in 1887 on land that was granted to the Young Men's Catholic Temperance Society and the Father Mathew Abstinence Society by the City of Salem. It was moved to its present site in 1916.
