    Description:
A mustached Civil War soldier stands with his proper right hand grasping the upper stock of his rifle, which is grounded at his side. The rifle leans slightly forward and away from his body. His proper left hand grasps the strap of a pouch that hangs at his side. He wears a wide-brimmed hat and has a blanket roll across his chest. The sculpture is mounted atop a tall, tapered shaft with a decorated cornice. The shaft is set upon a tiered base with a stepped bottom. On each of the sides at the top of the base are bas-relief decorations: crossed swords on the north side; crossed flags on the west side; crossed cannons on the south side; and an anchor on the east side. On the tier below this, thirteen stars are incorporated into a garland that drapes around all four sides.

    Remarks:
The sculpture cost approximately $2,332. The Varina Jefferson Davis Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy raised money for the project through public subscription and by hosting various fund-raising events. The sculpture was ordered from Monumental Cut Stone Company. Originally, the sculpture was to be installed in the National Cemetery, but the Quartermaster of the Army objected to the inscription "Lest We Forget," as well as the soldier atop the shaft and the Confederate flags on the base. He suggested that these elements of the sculpture be modified in order for installation to go forward. The Daughters of the Confederacy refused to make the changes, and instead, installed the sculpture on the grounds of the county courthouse. IAS files contain additional information about the controversy from the transcript of an article appearing in the Southwest Times Record, July 27, 1975.
