Located Wisconsin State Capitol, North entrance, Madison, Wisconsin
    Exhibitions:
    World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893.
    Remarks:
The sculpture was created for the Wisconsin Pavilion of the World's Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago in 1893. It was funded by women throughout the state of Wisconsin. The original model for the sculpture had the mascot of the Eighth Wisconsin division, Old Abe an eagle, on the figurehead, but that model was destroyed in a fire prior to the Exposition opening.
From 1893 to 1904, the sculpture was housed inside the Wisconsin State Capitol. In 1905, shortly before a fire destroyed the old Capitol, the sculpture was moved outdoors on the Capitol grounds. It was moved to its current site at the north Hamilton Street entrance in 1915.
