Remarks:
The monument is dedicated to the 500 African Americans who served under Washington during the winter at Valley Forge in 1777, and to the 5,000 African Americans who died during the Revolutionary War. It is installed on the site where the country's first black army regiment, the Second Rhode Island, were encamped. The relief is based on a design by Calvin Massey and was created in bronze by sculptor Phil Sumpter. Members of the Valley Forge alumnae chapter of the Delta Signa Theta Sorority raised part of $100,000 to pay for the monument by selling color prints of Massey's design. IAS files contain an article from Art Matters (July/August 1993), pg. 6; and an invitation to the ground breaking ceremony held on April 17, 1993.
