Description:
A bearded and mustached figure of a Union Civil War soldier stands at parade rest dressed in boots, pants, a belt with an eagle on the buckle, an overcoat, cape, and a cap. Hanging from his belt are a bayonet on the proper left side, and a pouch at the left rear with "U.S." on it. He holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands, proper left over proper right. The butt of the rifle rests on the plinth in front of the figure's proper right boot. He stands atop tiered granite and concrete base.

Remarks:
At a 1910 Springfield town meeting, a vote was taken to appropriate $300 for a soldiers monument. Another $350 was gathered through public subscription. The total cost of the monument was $650. The monument was erected in memory of those men from Springfield who served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. The monument was erected on the site of the town's old muster ground.
