    Description: 
    The sculpture depicts a wounded color sergeant lying on the ground, his proper right arm extended having just passed his flag to a fellow soldier who marches on, carrying the flag in his raised proper right hand. The sculpture rests on a square base.

    Remarks: 
    When local physician Dr. Justin Allen died in 1908, his will provided $8,000 to the Town of Topsfield to erect a monument to commemorate the citizens of Topsfield who enlisted in the army during the Civil War. The sculpture was modeled from a design submitted by Alphonso T. Merrill. IAS files contain an excerpt from George Francis Dow's "The History of Topsfield," Topsfield, MA: Topsfield Historical Society, 1940, pg. 230.
