Remarks:
John Alexander Logan, 1826-1886, was a Civil War general who was instrumental in initiating the observance of Memorial Day and in finding homes for Civil War veterans. The statue is to commemorate his war contribution, his establishment of Memorial Day, and his work as Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. The cost of the statue was $150 and it is made of sandstone donated by Hot Springs mayor Fred Evans on March 26, 1894. The figure was originally sited elsewhere on the grounds atop a large mound. The stone for the base is from the Sheridan Lake quarry. IAS files contain related articles from Hot Springs Star (Hot Springs, SD), July 27, 1894, which describes the dedication ceremony, and an article from May 24, 1988. IAS files also contain a related materials from the files of the Fall River County Historical Society.
