    Description: 
    A Civil War soldier, dressed in Union uniform, stands at parade rest with his hands holding the tip of his gun. He wears a cap and a coat with a cape. He stands with the rifle butt between his feet on a rusticated granite base.

    Remarks: 
    IAS files contain an article from the Hartland Historical Society's "In Sight of Ye Great River, History & Houses of Hartland, Vermont," July 4, 1991, pg. 89, which gives the history of the monument. Donated in 1930, by Lewis E. Merritt, the statue honors soldiers from Hartland who served in 1776, 1861, 1914, and 1941.
