    (Base, tablet on front:) THE SOLDIERS AND SAILORS OF CAMBRIDGE, WHOSE NAMES ARE HERE INSCRIBED, DIED IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY, IN THE WAR FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF THE UNION. / TO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY OF THEIR VALOR AND PATRIOTISM, THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY THE CITY, A.D. 1869-70. (names of soldiers are inscribed on tablets attached to the base)
    Description: 
    A large architectural structure topped by a stone figure of a Civil War soldier holding his rifle. A bronze portrait of Abraham Lincoln standing inside the memorial is visible through the arches on each side of the memorial. Metal tablets inscribed with the names of Massachusetts military men are attached to the base of the monument. The memorial is surrounded by a low metal fence.

    Remarks: 
    The figure of Lincoln is by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It was cast in 1887 and was added to the memorial at a later date. IAS files contain a transcription of the names that appear on the base tablets.
