Remarks:
Long was a former governor and U. S. Senator from the state of Louisiana. The sculpture was commissioned and paid for by Gerald L. K. Smith of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Cost of the sculpture was between $25,000 and $35,000. Mr. Smith originally commissioned sculptor Adrian Forette, but Forette died while still working on preliminary sketches. The commission was then given to McCart in 1973. The sculpture was originally installed on the grounds of the St. Maurice Mansion (formerly Prothro Plantation) and was owned by the Elna N. Smith Foundation. The sculpture was donated to the Winn Parish Police Jury and relocated to its present site at the Winn Parish Courthouse in July, 1982. IAS files contain copies of numerous related articles from the Winn Parish Enterprise, 1972-1982.
