    Remarks:
The sculpture was the gift of James Depew Edmundson, who wished to honor his late father, William, an early settler of Mahaska County, Iowa and the first Mahaska County sheriff. While visiting Paris in 1906, Edmundson contacted the noted American sculptor, George Bissell, who introduced him to a young sculptor and Iowa native, Sherry Edmundson Fry. The sculpture of Chief Mahaska (ca. 1784-1834) was created in Paris, France and was first displayed as a model in the 1907 Paris Salon. The next year when Fry exhibited the completed sculpture, it was awarded the Prix de Rome. The statue arrived at Rock Island depot in Oskaloosa in September of 1908. The base was funded by contributions of coins from school children. McCall Granite Works supplied and installed the base. The statue was unveiled on Mahaska Day, May 12, 1909 to an estimated crowd of about 12,000. IAS files contain copies from Mahaska County Historical Society, "Mahaska County - Our Rich Heritage," Oskaloosa, Iowa: Mahaska County Historical Society, April 1961; and newspaper articles which detail the dedication and mention funding of the base. IAS files also contain copy of Oct. 16, 1999 rededication pamphlet.
