Remarks:
The sculptures were a gift of Alaska-native novelist Barrat Willoughby, in appreciation of the work in Alaska by Father Bernard R. Hubbard, the university's famed "Glacier Priest." The sculptures were hand carved in Oberammergau, Germany, purchased by Willoughby and given to Father Hubbard. The statues were restored in 1961/1962, and the refinishing included termite-proofing by Frabni Termite Control (San Jose, CA). IAS files contain related articles from Santa Clara Journal, May 16, 1962, pg. 7 and San Jose News, May 1962. For further information see Santa Cruz University Archives folder on the Mission Church Restoration, MCCOU 18. The Mission has been designated a California Registered Historical Landmark, no. 338.
