Remarks:  The sculpture served as a grave marker for John McDonogh (1779-1850), a philanthropist, who endowed the school in his will. IAS files contain "Monument to John McDonogh," American & Commercial Advertiser, Aug. 1, 1866; and a citation for Hugh F. Burgess, Jr. and Robert C. Smoot's "McDonogh School: An Interpretive Chronology." (Columbus, Ohio 1973) pp. 14, 213. Also on file is "Joh McDonogh's Rules for Living," and a transcription of plaque information.
