Remarks:
King Gambrinus is the legendary first brewer of beer, a mythical figure, the likeness based on a historical 13th century duke, Jan Primus, who was president of the Brussels Guild of Brewers. This aluminum version has two predecessors. An original wood carving of King Gambrinus (possibly by Gustave Haug) was placed atop the roof peak of the newly completed Pabst Brewing Company in 1857. In 1872, as result of company expansion, the brewery commissioned Carl Kuehns, a wood carver with Matthew Brothers Furniture Company, to carve a copy of the original. It was placed atop an archway leading to the loading yard on Chestnut Street (now West Juneau Street). By 1967, deterioration of Kuehn's carving resulted in an aluminum replacement cast being made, to be placed atop the entrance to the brewery's Sternewirt. The aluminum sculpture was later moved to storage when the Pabst Brewing Company moved its headquarters to San Antonio, Texas. The original wood carving was purchased by Sid Stone, developer of Stonecraft, where it stood in the courtyard until destroyed by lighting in the late 1970s.
