    Description:
An abstract sculpture of four people encircling a central torch or chimney structure. The upper section of the bodies and the torch are delineated and the remainder of the forms run together into a large amorphous, undefined shape. At least two of the people may be hooded. One hooded figure stands above the others and raises its proper right hand, while the other figures' arms flow one into the other creating one organic modulating form. Extensions appear from the main mass as feet or root-like structures. These extend outward and around the base of the mass.

    Remarks:
The sculpture was a Bicentennial project created by students from Tucson High School under the supervision of E. C. Mathews and Robert Sandin. It was commissioned by the Committee for the Religious Observance of the Bicentennials and initiated by the Tucson Ecumenical Council. The sculpture was a gift to the City of Tucson and given in the name of the religious community of Tucson. The sculpture was made from a model by senior Joe Vidal. The sculpture represents the "brotherhood of man." The roots forming the base of the sculpture symbolize growth. IAS files contain a transcription of an article from the Tucson Citizen, Jan. 10, 1976.
