Remarks:
Kelly Ingram Park is part of the Birmingham Civil Rights District. The creation of the Civil Rights District was managed by Diversified Project Management, Inc. of Birmingham, AL. Edah B. Grover and her firm, Grover Harrison Harrison, as well as Grover E. Mouton, III redesigned the area covered by the Civil Rights District. IAS files contain related articles from Birmingham Post-Herald (Birmingham, AL), July 8, 1992; Birmingham News (Birmingham, AL), Nov. 15, 1992; and Birmingham News (Birmingham, AL), July 12, 1992 which discuss the 1963 Palm Sunday march down sixth Avenue made by Rev. John Porter, Rev. Nelson Smith, and Rev. A. D. King which inspired this memorial. According to the news articles, the depictions are meant to be generic and not specific likenesses since this is a memorial to all ministers who played a roll in the Civil Rights Movement. IAS files also contain a copy of the 1991 Design Manual for the Birmingham Civil Rights District, prepared by Diversified Project Management.
