    Remarks:
Severn Teackle Wallis (1816-1894) was a prominent Baltimore lawyer who was also known as a wit, reformer, poet, author, linguist, and orator. Two of his best known books are "Glimpses of Spain" and "A Discourse of the Life and Character of George Peabody." His is also known for laying the foundation of Civil Service Reform in Maryland.
The sculpture was commissioned by the Municipal Art Society of Baltimore. The artist based his portrait on a photograph of Wallis, and because details were so important to the artist, one of Wallis' suits was sent as a model. The sculpture was originally installed in the South Garden of Mt. Vernon Place, but was moved in 1919 when the gardens were relandscaped.
