    Remarks:
Eugenio Maria de Hostos (1839-1903) was a Puerto Rican educator, writer, sociologist, and lawyer in Madrid. The bust was brought to Florida, possibly from Madrid, around 1977. It was originally installed in Bayfront Park and dedicated on January 11, 1978 by the City of Miami Department of Parks and Recreation. It was donated to Mayor Maurice A. Ferre by J. A. Balseiro, in memory of his wife, Mercedes P. Balseiro. Sometime thereafter the sculpture was moved. A March, 1994 Resolution (#94-164) was passed by the City of Miami to donate the bust to the Metro-Dade County Art in Public Places Program. The 1994 Resolution called for placement of the bust at the county-owned De Hostos Community Center (the Metro-Dade Wynwood Neighborhood Service Center) in Miami. At the time of the SOS! survey, the bust was not on its new pedestal at that site.
IAS files contain a copy of the 1978 dedication program, a transcription of text on original base, and an article from Florida Park & Recreation News (Feb. 1978): pg. 7, which shows the bust at the time of its dedication, with pedestal and plaques visible. IAS files also contain a shipping receipt dated June, 1977; a copy of Resolution No. 94-164; and transfer receipt to Metro Dade County Art in Public Places, dated Oct. 18, 1994.
