Description:
A multipart, abstract sculpture composed of a stone table with concrete seating cubes or "chairs"; a colonnade of concrete columns with stone slabs lying on top, reminiscent of a Greek temple; and a free-standing, four-way, gothic arch. The columns, the inside of the arch, and the "chairs" are covered with approximately 800 brightly-colored, 6 x 6 inch and 12 x 12 inch, glazed ceramic tiles. The tiles, each created and signed by individual children, depict various symbols, shapes and scenes. Rough-hewn, bench-like structures of stone and concrete are placed nearby.

Remarks:
The sculpture was funded by a $60,000 grant from the Ohio Arts Council, with an additional $20,000 funded for site preparation. The artist was assisted by Cleveland Institute of Art students Rob Bliss, Catherine Todd and Eric Macalla. The artist involved over 1,000 people from the Near West Side community of Cleveland. Individual residents and children designed tiles that are part of the sculpture. According to the artist, the tiles provided a place for residents to portray part of their family traditions. The sculpture represents the ancient joining with the future. People sit and sleep on the sculpture. Nearby plaque reads: "TEMPUS PONS"/"Tempus Pons," Dedicated on/October 26, 1985/To the people of the Near West Side/and to the Recipients of the First/Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio '84:/Frances C.
