    Description:
At the top of a polished granite column stands a bronze figure of a young boy holding out a copy of the New York Daily News in his proper right hand, with several more copies tucked beneath his proper left arm. At the base of the column are two bronze fountain spouts depicting a lion's head and a devil's head, which pour water into a small circular fountain basin. The fountain basin originally functioned as a watering trough for horses with two smaller troughs on either side for cats and dogs. Above the each of the smaller troughs is a bronze cat and a bronze dog's head.

    Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned by Great Barrington resident, Col. William Lee Brown, part-owner and business manager of the original New York Daily News (no relation to the current paper). He wanted to create a lasting tribute to the young newspaper carriers who had served his paper so well. He included the animal fountain spouts as he was a great animal lover as well. He chose the M. Lux Monument Works of Great Barrington to create the column and fountain basin.
The devil's head fountain spout was stolen sometime prior to 1938 and the lion's head fountain spout disappeared during the 1960s. Through the fund-raising efforts of Barrie Hughes, a newspaper circulation manager and former newsboy himself, the sculpture was restored and replicas of the two missing bronze fountain spouts were made by John and Elinor Lovegrove. Following the restoration, the fountain was rededicated in October of 1973.
