Remarks:
The sculpture was presented to the people of America by Sir Charles Cheers Wakefield, former Lord Mayor of London, through the Sulgrave Institution. This sculpture is another cast of the original installed in Bristol, England. M. H. Martyn Company cast both pieces. The architect Frederick D. Owen created a temporary base in Sept. 1922 because the statue had to be moved from the south front of the courthouse during its renovation, 1922-1923. Horace W. Peaslee created the permanent base in June 1923. New England Granite Works was responsible for the stonework. IAS files contain an excerpt from Jannelle Warren-Findley's Aug. 1, 1985 report for the National Park Service entitled, "A Guide to Selected Statues, Monuments and Memorials," National Capital Parks - Central, National Park Service, Washington, D.C. (RFQ 3-4-1919) which includes a brief maintenance history, a list of bibliographic sources, and notes to additional information found in National Park Service files.
