Description:
Monument consists of an oversized wedge-shaped pulpit with a sloped surface that contains the full text of the "I Have a Dream" speech. The viewer must stand in a set of size 9 1/2 footprints, (Dr. King's shoe size), in order to read the speech. Bronze reliefs depict speeches, marches and a photo-etching of Dr. King. Concrete reliefs show the torsos and linked arms of civil rights marchers. There is a simulated pond of blue granite at top and an obelisk at the end. Topping the monument is a hand which is releasing a hummingbird, symbolizing freedom.

Remarks:
Commissioned by the Community Redevelopment Agency for $80,000. This is the first monument to Dr. King in Watts. Its location is the site of a shopping center destroyed in the Watts Rebellion of 1965. Artist was assisted by students from the Edwin Markham Middle School in Watts, as well as by a staff of artists. IAS files contain the full inscriptions on the monument and commemorative plaques, including the names of the students. IAS files also include Oct. 17, 1991 press release, related newsclippings, and CRDA memorandum.
