Remarks:
The statue cost $6,000. The bronze was donated by the city in the spring of 1977 in honor of the nation's 200th birthday. The statue marks the route of the Santa Fe Trail where it passed through the Prairie Village area. According to the artist, the boy is watching the wagon trains move westward and wondering what would happen if he joined them. He is at a moment of decision in his life which is especially symbolic for the nearby high school students. He represents all the future decisions they will have to make. The sculpture is lit by two spotlights. Nearby plaque reads: THE PRAIRIE BOY/THIS STATUE MARKS THE ROUTE OF THE SANTA FE TRAIL AS IT PASSED THROUGH THE PRAIRIE VILLAGE AREA IN 1856.
