    (On each side of monument, just above arch:) ANDREW / LINCOLN / THOMAS / FARRAGUT (In niche:) In memory of the men of W. Roxbury who died in the service of their country during the rebellion of 1861-65, Erected by the town of W. Roxbury A. D. 1871.
    Description: 
    The monument consists of a broad Gothic revival base topped with a standing Civil War soldier wearing a Union Army uniform and holding his rifle with both hands on the barrel. The base is square and has an archway on each side. The monument is surrounded by a low metal fence.

    Remarks: 
    In 1978, the fence was replaced and the finial was replaced. A plaque attached to the fence surrounding the monument reads: Restoration of the Jamaica Plain Soldiers Monument was made possible through a grant from the Edward Ingersoll Browne Trust Fund, a private fund administered by the City of Boston. This site is maintained by the Boston Parks Dept.
