    Remarks:
In 1929 William H. Lightner was commissioned by the Sisters of Mercy to design and build a grotto on the Mount Mercy College campus. Lightner was a self-taught visionary artist and the Grotto was his life's work. What began as a single structure eventually expanded to five structures (only four remain; a mosaic shrine was torn down in the 1960s due to vandalism). It took Lightner twelve years of daily work, which he donated along with over $42,000 worth of materials, freight, and landscaping.
