    Remarks:
Funds for the project were provided by the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation. The idea for the dates originated in 1959 with landscape architect William B. S. Leong. In the early 1960s, Joseph G. Barnes designed and hand-forged the gates; the decorative screen panels were a later addition, added 5 to 7 years after Barnes' death. Modified from designs left by Barnes, the screens were made by Barnes' nephew James Doubleday and his colleague James Fiske. Duke Gardens."
