Full-length figure of Neptune stands on an ornate pedestal decorated with seahorses and cupids, set within a square basin. Four putti sit on the top corners of the pedestal. Each holds a fish out of whose mouths water spouts into scalloped basins located on the corners below. Four mermaids astride dolphins are located at the bottom tier of the pedestal. On each side of the pedestal between the mermaids is an oblong basin. Remarks:
The current marble Neptune figure, produced by Carrara Marble Co. and installed during the 1960s, is a reduced-sized replica of a copy done sometime before 1815 of an original bronze fountain "La Fountana Del Nettuno," erected in Bologna, Italy in 1563. The original bronze figure of Neptune was cast by Giambologna; the original carved fountain pedestals done in collaboration with Palermita Lauretti. A marble replica of that fountain was created sometime prior to 1815, and stood in a villa garden in the Gorizia region of Italy until about 1925, when it was purchased by art dealer Arnoldo Adolfo di Signi and sold to the Chateau Art Studios in Los Angeles. That replica was purchased for Palo Verdes Estates and a new basin was executed in Bologna just prior to the work's dedication in 1930. Over the years, the first marble statue suffered damage from vandals, and during the 1960s a replacement copy of the replica was made by Carrara Marble Co. Both marble copies are still in existence and both suffer damage from vandals. IAS files have photograph of the first marble replica as it stood in the Chateaua Art Studio before being brought to Palas Verdes Estates in 1929.
