    Description:
A memorial comprised of three adjacent triangles. The first triangle, made of concrete, is half the height of the other two. The middle "image" triangle, made of Cor-Ten steel, has a cut-out silhouette of three figures -- two soldiers supporting a wounded soldier. The third "reflector" triangle, made of concrete, is located directly behind the cut-out triangle. Light passing through the silhouetted cutouts, casts an image of the soldiers onto the concrete triangle. Five recessed were incorporated as part of the surrounding concrete walkway to shine on the sculpture at night.

    Remarks:
The idea for the sculpture originated in 1984, with the formation of a VVLP (Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program of Maine) committee. The design was chosen on Jan. 10, 1985. The memorial was expected to cost $110,000 ($10,000 contributed by the State of Maine); but much of the labor and materials were donated, so actual cost was $87,000. (Left-over funds established a scholarship program.) American Steel Company provided the steel; employees of Bath Iron Works (Lapierre, King, and Babine) cut out the image; Nelson Welding was responsible for the fabrication of the piece; and Yankee Construction served as general contractor for the project. IAS files contain copy of dedication booklet (Oct. 19, 1985) and related newspaper clippings, including the Kennebec Journal (Aug. 17, 1985, pg. 1); (Oct. 22, 1985, pg. 6); (April 23, 1985, pg. 5) and (Dec. 16, 1993).
