Description:
Portrait of Roberto Clemente (1934-1972) wearing his Pittsburgh Pirates baseball uniform caught in mid-stride just after he has hit the baseball. His proper left hand is dropping the bat and his proper left leg is raised and bent as he begins to run. He is looking out into the baseball diamond. The sculpture rests in the center of a black granite base with a baseball diamond in the center. Glass blocks represent first, second, and third base. Beneath the glass is soil from Puerto Rico, his birth place; Forbes Field; and Three Rivers Stadium. A stainless steel rim inscribed with fifteen events in Clemente's life encircles the baseball diamond. The sixteenth place along the rim is left open symbolizing the incomplete circle of Clemente's life which was cut short in an airplane crash on December 31, 1972.

Remarks:
L.D. Astorino & Associates designed the base. IAS files contain a L.D. Astorino & Associates brochure which transcribes the fifteen events in Roberto Clemente's life inscribed around the rim of the base. IAS files also contain the program from the July 8, 1994 dedication ceremony; a L.D. Astorino & Associates brochure on the artist which includes several detail images of the sculpture; and an article from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, July 8, 1994, pg. A1-7 which describes the life of Roberto Clemente and how the sculptor, Susan Wagner, came to create the piece.
The sculpture was sponsored by the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club who put together a selection committee which created a competition to select the artist. The sculpture and installation cost $200,000 which was paid for by public subscription. The fifteen inch bronze model Wagner used in the competition was to be presented to the family of Roberto Clemente.
